Change
and reflections on endings
Change, it is a word that I have been acknowledging and confronting for a while now. In fact, I had the idea for this post nearly a year ago.
People say all sorts of things about this word. It can be quite a loaded thing if you let it be. As a result I think that is why I have been mulling over how I was going to express myself about the changes that I have dealt with recently.
One thing that I decided to do was delete my profile on X. It had been brewing for a while but I just feel there are better ways to use my time when I am engaging on social media. Given that it had been my social media platform of choice, it meant that there was a lot less use of social media in the tail end of last year as a result. Plus I found it quite illuminating that I didn’t miss it.
Due to the things that were going on last year, I did turn to books for solace. Although I didn’t get into much of a reading groove. But in June last year I did succeed in devouring quickly the fiction winner of last year’s Women’s Prize. It held my attention.
I was talking to an acquaintance the other evening. We have both been through quite a lot over the past few months. We agreed with one another that there is no option other than to keep on going. That’s exactly how I tackled stuff last year and with the help of my family and friends, I managed to move home.
That was the closure of a long chapter and the beginning of a new one. I’ve had some people ask me recently if I feel settled yet in my new home. It isn’t something that I have given much thought to. On reflection, I think it is a gradual process. Plus I still have boxes of unpacked things (mostly books).
I’m not afraid of change. There’s been plenty of it during my 50 years. It has just kind of escalated over the last few.
I’ve become more successful at focusing on things. Realising what is important. Letting go of things that are not worth worrying about. Going with the flow.
Trying new things. I never expected to like oysters for instance.
But some things stay the same. Tiramisu is still one of my all time favourite desserts!
What are your thoughts on change?
